Mujadara Recipe
Mujadara is a traditional Middle Eastern dish made with lentils, rice, and caramelized onions.
The lentils and rice are typically cooked together with spices such as cumin, coriander, and allspice, and then topped with a generous amount of caramelized onions. Mujadara is often served with a side of yogurt or a salad. It is a simple, hearty, and flavorful dish that is popular throughout the Middle East.
Here is a recipe for making mujadara:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup brown lentils
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon allspice
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Optional toppings: yogurt, chopped parsley or mint
Instructions:
- Rinse the lentils and rice in a fine mesh sieve.
- In a large saucepan, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add the lentils, rice, cumin, coriander, allspice, salt, and black pepper. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the lentils and rice are tender.
- Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a separate pan over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- When the lentils and rice are cooked, fluff them with a fork and transfer them to a serving dish. Top with the caramelized onions.
- If desired, serve the mujadara with a side of yogurt and a sprinkle of chopped parsley or mint. Enjoy!
